A soldier’s life

Hitler used his best troops to fight in Russia. The Dutch section of the Atlantic Wall was manned by soldiers who were recovering from service on the Eastern Front or being trained to go there.

Service on the Atlantic wall was relatively safe, but monotonous. Inside the bunkers, off-duty soldiers relaxed by drinking wine, smoking cigars, singing, and writing letters to relatives or loved ones. During longer periods of leave, they went shopping in The Hague or took advantage of local nightlife.
